Carron Riparian Improvement Project
September 2005

The Kyle proprietors through the Kyle of Sutherland Salmon Fishery Board (Kyle Board) created the Kyle Trust which is an approved charity dedicated to raising money for projects which improve the aquatic health of the region. While the Trust is a separate legal entity it cannot make a significant impact without the support of the proprietors.

The most obvious project which can help the Carron to put out more smolts than at present is improvement of the riparian habitat beyond that existing today. The Carron proprietors are being asked to support just such a riparian project. The current Carron representatives on the Kyle Board have already given their support to this Trust initiative.

Now is a good time to have a Carron riparian improvement project for the principal government agencies are in favour and the government has created 90% grants to assist. The grants are in favour of longitudinal connectivity so that the increased bio-diversity that comes with additional riparian vegetation and tree cover can migrate. The Trust wish to emphasise this point by urging proprietors prepared to support the Trust  to plan additional improvements through the Trust. In other words a change from a previous policy of urging each to do good things towards a team effort transcending estate marches.

As a first step, the CEO of the Trust, David Houston, is walking Carron banks to familiarise himself. The initial areas walked will be on Braelangwell, Amat, Glencalvie and Alladale. If these areas were included in the scheme they could easily connect to existing areas of tree and vegetation cover. A first edition of a Carron riparian repair and improvement plan will then be produced for Carron riparian proprietors to look at with a view to seeing what other areas could be included to make an holistic plan covering the length of the river.
